It’s not that I haven’t figured out what I want to do with my life, because I’ve figured that out several times already. But now I want to do something different and I’m not yet sure what that is. The time I spent in Oklahoma and the career I had there were great, and that’s what I wanted to do be doing at that point in time. For the longest while after leaving, my memories about my life there were bad because I stayed about 2 years too long. It’s important to know when to move on...do it before you hate your job, life, home, and friends. When I finally came to this realization I knew I never hated my life in Oklahoma, it took nearly 5 years for that epiphany. Moreover, I don’t hate what I do here now in Arizona; it’s just that it’s time to move on. So Mexico it is; and I have few goals yet established to accomplish while there. I’m going to learn Spanish (I know very Eat, Pray, Love like), and I think I'll learn to surf. I know that sounds so cliche, but that’s big for me. You see I’ve always been a planner. Planning for my next move, my next career, my next promotion, my next abode. Of course there is a lot of planning to be done before moving to another country; I’ll need a job and a place to live, but that’s gotta happen just to help me achieve my goals. Will I formulate other goals while there? Of course, but not until I accomplish my initial ambitions, or at least get a good start. I think this is a time in my life when I’m going to learn to appreciate the small things, do without all the necessities that aren’t really necessary, appreciate simplicity. I’m excited about the prospect, while at the same time a bit scared. I won’t be contributing to my 401k for a year, I won’t have health insurance for a year, I may have a minimum wage job for a year. I haven’t had a minimum wage job since I was a teenager! I think I might be a tour guide, or a concierge, something in the travel industry...no matter how little I make, I’ll be having the time of my life, taking care of myself financially, physically, and dare I say spiritually? While at the same time helping others do the same thing! Maybe that’s what life is about and I’ve been sorely missing out on this holistic mentality. Everything is so compartmentalized and perhaps it’s not supposed to be, or maybe I just don’t want it to be anymore. It’s time for me to move forward and learn new things.
So I’d be remiss in leaving out some very important details regarding my up and coming vagabonding adventure. I’m not going it alone, I have 3 absolutely amazing friends joining me in this journey. Doug, who has been my friend for 14 or so years, 8 of which we’ve lived together, his girlfriend and my soul mate Stephanie (I won’t get into the intricacies of my close friendships just yet), and my friend Aaron whom I only met about 2 years ago but has become a permanent and irreplaceable fixture in my life. We all have a passion for travel and a current desire to spread our wings and experience something new. We’ve set a date for departure, April 1. And no the irony hasn’t been missed by any of us, I assure you this is no elaborate April Fools joke. For now we’re planning, saving, learning to speak Spanish, simplifying...we have 6 months to prepare and that time will go by quickly I’m sure. Viva el Mexico!
